Ranking Saints' greatest remaining team needs after 2024 draft

The New Orleans Saints were busy during and after the 2024 NFL draft, but they couldn’t check off every item on their to-do list. At least they were able to put out the biggest fires. But there’s more work to be done before they’ll be ready for training camp in July, much less the start of the season in September.

But where to start? More reinforcements for the offensive line? Or do they need more weapons for Derek Carr and Klint Kubiak? What about Dennis Allen’s defense, which currently has six fewer players on the roster than the offense (and almost twice as many veterans over 30)?

We’ve done our best to highlight each vulnerability and identify possible solutions. Here are the Saints’ top remaining team needs with the NFL draft in rearview:

Saints spent big to sign undrafted Idaho returns ace Jermaine Jackson

NFL teams tell you how they value players by their actions, and most importantly how they spend their money. With the 2024 NFL draft behind us the New Orleans Saints entered a fierce bidding war with other teams for the rookies whose names were not called during the draft. And one of their first pickups was a costly one: Idaho Vandals wide receiver/return man Jermaine Jackson.

Jackson is listed at 5-foot-7 and 170 pounds so he’s cut from the same cloth as other Saints returns specialists like Rashid Shaheed and Deonte Harty. While he received just a $10,000 signing bonus to come to New...

Updated New Orleans Saints depth chart after the 2024 draft

It was a busy weekend for the New Orleans Saints, who picked seven rookies and signed 15 more as undrafted free agents. That’s a ton of young talent getting injected to the roster, and it’s going to change the shape of the depth chart one way or another (well, really in several different ways). Some positions suddenly look deeper when just a few days ago they seemed vulnerable. Others that may have been perceived as a strength are now a little too crowded.

So how do things stand now? Which positions were most heavily impacted? Where do they still need to make more additions? Here’s our take on the Saints’ updated roster after the 2024 draft. For the most part all rookies are starting out at the bottom of the depth chart, but we’re expecting some big movers in the weeks and months ahead.

Take a bow, Mickey Loomis. And Jeff Ireland. You too, Dave Ziegler and Randy Mueller — the four different general managers (past and present) who crowded into the New Orleans Saints’ war room for the 2024 NFL draft.

You don’t see this too often. Pro Football Focus draft analyst Trevor Sikkema awarded the Saints with an elusive A-plus grade for their haul in the 2024 draft. Not just for getting the most out of their early-round picks in right tackle Taliese Fuaga and cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry, but for getting great value later on with picks like quarterback Spencer Rattler and...

Saints invite a couple of undrafted locals to try out at rookie minicamp

You can’t say the New Orleans Saints are overlooking NFL talent in their own backyard. A couple of undrafted players have been invited to participate in the Saints’ upcoming rookie minicamp on a tryout basis, per NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill: Tulane offensive lineman Cameron Wire and Mississippi State safety Shawn Preston.

Rookie minicamp has been scheduled for May 10-12. Wire’s Tulane teammate Sincere Haynesworth, the Green Wave’s longtime starting center, will be in the mix after signing an undrafted free agent contract with the Saints on Saturday. Preston is taking the same...

2024 Draft Grades: Saints pick DT Khristian Boyd with No. 199 overall selection

The New Orleans Saints got one of ‘their guys’ from this draft process in Northern Iowa’s Khristian Boyd with the No. 199 overall selection in the 2024 NFL draft.

Trevor Penning’s former teammate is known for his strength. Boyd put up an insane 38 reps of 225 on the bench. He uses that strength to his advantage as a run stuffer, but that’s really all he’ll be expected to do at the next level.

Much like Penning, he plays with a high motor and is very aggressive off of the snap. He should have a rotational role as a rookie, much like the Saints usually get out of their undrafted free...

New Orleans Saints 2024 undrafted free agent tracker

257 picks are in the books, but the New Orleans Saints are far from finished. The hours and days after the 2024 NFL draft will be filled with phone calls and rapid negotiations as the Saints compete with other teams to recruit undrafted players. These rookie free agents make up a huge part of the league’s workforce, and it’s vital that the Saints get their guys.

New Orleans has had a lot of success signing and developing undrafted free agents over the years. More recently they’ve picked up playmakers like wide receiver Rashid Shaheed, defensive end Carl Granderson, and safety J.T. Gray (who has earned Pro Bowl and All-Pro recognition for his work on special teams). Every year a couple of these rookie free agents make the final 53-man roster, and some of them turn out to be real diamonds found in the rough.

These players are hoping to take the same path, following in their footsteps. Check this space often for instant analysis on each reported undrafted free agent signing:

Saints select a little-known offensive lineman with their final 2024 draft pick

The New Orleans Saints spent their final pick in the 2024 NFL draft on Josiah Ezirim, an Eastern Kentucky offensive lineman, who they selected at No. 239 overall. That’s the pick they got back from the Denver Broncos in exchange for Wil Lutz last year. So what’s his story?

Ezirim turns 23 in May, and he played a lot of snaps at Eastern Kentucky over the last two years while starting at right tackle. Pro Football Focus charting found that he allowed just two sacks during that time, and he was nearly perfect on a career-high 490 snaps in pass protection last season. The Colonels ran with...

There it is. The 2024 NFL draft is in the books, and it was a unique experience for New Orleans Saints fans. Their team only traded up once despite owning a wealth of selections on the draft’s third and final day, opting to stay put and let the board fall to them. It’s a reversal of their usually-aggressive strategy under general manager Mickey Loomis. Maybe it will lead to better results than we’ve seen in other drafts.

That strategy led to some very interesting pickups. Here’s a recap of the Saints’ 2024 draft class so you can get to know the rookies better:
