Underhill: Not acquiring another pressure player might have been as risky for Saints as trading up to draft one

By Nick Underhill

The Saints took a risk in trading up to draft Marcus Davenport.

This fact is already known. There is no need to rehash the stakes. And even though snap judgments already exist about the deal, and it will be prematurely graded again after the season, it is probably going to take a few years before accurate evaluations exist.

That doesn’t mean we’re done discussing it. Not even close. One of the more interesting aspects of the trade came to light when ESPN's Mike Triplett pointed out that a deal like this has never happened before. It was the third time in the past 15 years that a team packaged two first-round picks to select a non-quarterback (the other two were receivers), and the first time a team dealt two first rounders to acquire a pick outside of the top 12 (the Saints moved up from 27 to 14 in exchange for next year's first-round pick and a fifth-rounder).

That doesn’t mean any deal for a non-quarterback who isn't Julio Jones is misguided. The Saints would have been better off making the same deal to move up from 27 to 14 in 2007 to get cornerback Darrelle Revis, which would have cost them Robert Meachem and whomever they would have picked in 2008 instead of trading up for Sedrick Ellis (assuming they still got guard Carl Nicks in the fifth). And no one would be questioning a team for making a similar trade to select J.J. Watt in 2011.

The New Orleans Saints and interior offensive lineman Lucas Patrick have agreed to terms on a one-year deal. Patrick is expected to sign on Monday.

Patrick, 30, went undrafted in 2016 before signing with the Green Bay Packers. Patrick has appeared in 96 games throughout his career starting in 56. The veteran lineman started 15 games for the Chicago Bears in 2023 allowing 25 total hurries without giving up a sack.

Patrick can play all positions in the interior of the line providing much-needed versatility for the Saints. New Orleans used their first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft to...

Saints say poor NFLPA report card didn't spark cafeteria renovations

It doesn’t sound like the New Orleans Saints’ leadership team was surprised to receive a poor grade on their team’s food options, but that doesn’t mean recent NFL Players Association report cards prompted extensive renovations to the cafeteria. The Saints were graded with an F in both 2023 and 2022 for their food/cafeteria offerings. So it’s easy to speculate that ongoing cafeteria construction (which is sending the team’s 2024 training camp to California) could be a response to that performance.

Team president Dennis Lauscha tackled that topic in a recent press conference with local...

Here’s some improved depth for the New Orleans Saints’ offensive line. NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill reported that the Saints have reached an agreement with free agent lineman Lucas Patrick on a one-year deal. Patrick has spent seven years in the NFL with the Green Bay Packers and, most recently, the Chicago Bears. He entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent from Duke.

Last year Patrick started 15 games at center for Chicago, where he worked with Andrew Janocko; the current Saints quarterbacks coach held the same role with the Bears. In his career Patrick has logged 1,000-plus...

B/R says Derek Carr is entering 2024 under immense pressure

Quarterback is the most important position in football, so determining your starter is, logically, one of the most important decisions you can make. The Saints have been bouncing from starter to starter over the last few years. Barring injury, Derek Carr should be the first quarterback to start the majority of games in back to back seasons since Drew Brees.

If you ask Maurice Moton, Carr will be doing so in a make-or-break season. The Bleacher Report writer laid out six quarterbacks who are entering seasons where they must perform or risk being moved on from:

It’s safe to say the New Orleans Saints moving their 2024 training camp to California isn’t a very popular move. Taking one of the most accessible events for fans and sending it halfway across the country, where NFL rules may not even allow fans on the West Coast to attend practices, has drawn a lot of criticism.

Ongoing renovations to the team headquarters and the construction of a new cafeteria meant the Saints would be taking their training camp on the road this summer. But the plan is to be back for 2025 and beyond. Team president Dennis Lauscha addressed that during a Saturday press...

You can’t say Gayle Benson isn’t investing in her team. The New Orleans Saints shared renderings of future plans and progress updates on renovations to their headquarters in Metairie, with work beginning on the team cafeteria as well as the indoor practice facility. It’s all part of a wide-reaching endeavor to modernize everything from the team’s draft-day war room to their locker room at the Caesars Superdome. Expansions to the weight room, media room and team meeting rooms are part of the plan, too.

Team president Dennis Lauscha spoke about the renovations

It’s been a busy weekend at the New Orleans Saints practice facility — 60 players gathered for rookie minicamp workouts, a third of them free agents participating on a tryout basis. This is an important opportunity for them to make their case for a spot on the Saints’ training camp roster later this summer.

And we’ve collected the best photos from the team’s rookie camp, featuring Saints rookie draft picks like Taliese Fuaga and Spencer Rattler as well as coaches Klint Kubiak and Dennis Allen. Here’s your first look at the newcomers in black and gold:

Taliese Fuaga knocking off the rust at left tackle in Saints rookie minicamp

This was mildly surprising. When the New Orleans Saints took the field for rookie minicamp practices this weekend, former Oregon State right tackle Taliese Fuaga was lining up on the left side of the line. He hasn’t played left tackle since he was in high school, but the Saints must be prepared in case they need him there in the fall.

And it makes more sense to have Fuaga knock off the rust in May than in August or September. He told reporters after practice that “Yeah, it’s just, you know a little rusty over there on the left side. Definitely got to get those reps in again.”

Right now...
