Cam Newton: Kirk Cousins Has Six Games to Prove Himself Before Penix Gets a Shot (2 Viewers)

They have been trying to replace Kirk Cousins forever starting with Washington. He always comes out winning (at least financially).

He’s like the top of the line of the “QB you’d be happy to take as your starter and can win many games with but you’ll always be trying to upgrade from him because you know deep down you’ll never win a championship with him” types.

Part of the issue is most fans see $100 Million as a lot of money over 3 years for a QB... but when you look at what billion dollar businesses are willing to pay QBs now... It really isn't.

NFL's highest paid quarterbacks in 2023 (average salary per year):

  • 1. Chargers QB Justin Herbert: $52.5 million
  • 2. Ravens QB Lamar Jackson: $52 million
  • 3. Eagles QB Jalen Hurts: $51 million.
  • 4. Broncos QB Russell Wilson: $49 million
  • 5. Cardinals QB Kyler Murray: $46.1 million
  • 6. Browns QB Deshaun Watson: $46 million
  • 7. Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes: $45 million
  • 8. Bills QB Josh Allen: $43 million
  • 9. Rams QB Matthew Stafford: $40 million
  • 9. Cowboys QB Dak Prescott: $40 million
  • 9. Giants QB Daniel Jones: $40 million

Like I previously said, you never know. They don't have Minnesota's personnel as much as folks think they do. And no, I'm not rooting for him to be benched. I'm just calling it like I see it.
ATL’s pass defense is an upgrade over the Vikings’. Bijan is a better RB than the Vikings’ RBs in recent seasons. London and Pitts both can become 1k receivers with Cousins; it’d be Pitts’ second 1k since his rookie year. He has a more complete team in ATL than Minny.

Rivalry aside, they have offensive pieces in place on paper to be well above .500. But I’ll love to see Penix start since it would mean Atlanta is near the bottom of the standings by that point.

Ok that's your opinion

The problem for Cousins will be that the fans (both of them) will start calling for Penix the first chance they get, when he apparently he left Minnesota to avoid that scenario. If he or the team struggles out the gate that will create issues.

But who knows? He's had security the whole time he was in Minnesota. Maybe having Penix behind him will push Cousins to play his best football.

The dossier on Penix is that he needs to develop. Putting aside the easy and natural desire to roast the Falcons, this is a smart bit of planning. You have a QB you like to win games with now, providing the perfect scenario for your raw, but promising, young QB to develop without undue pressure.

People seem to just accept that 'throwing the rookie to the wolves' is largely what happens now, when in the not so distant past, teams knew the rookie needed time before being put in such a tough spot. Even Mahomes sat and watched in year 1 - I bet every coach on that team will tell you it made him better when the time came to play in Year 2.

It’d be funny to see Cousins pulled just for Penix to lose most games the rest of the way this season. If Penix doesn’t play well right away, then they killed both QBs’ morales by caving into fans’ wishes instead of competently running their team and letting the process flow.

Their splash FA former opening starter is forced to become a disgruntled pricey QB2 while he has a 40M cap hit-65M dead money cap charge in 2025.

They’d be stuck with the most expensive backup in NFL history on the sideline while forced to live or die with Penix after pulling Cousins so early.

Just a litany of potential problems they’ve created for themselves. Not sure what Terry was thinking. He got way too cute here.

We have lotta dead cap charges ourselves that were poor management decisions. (Ram was broken before his second contract)
