Cousins stunned Falcons took Penix (2 Viewers)

More info on the decision.

They missed the playoffs and they are drafting a QB in the 1st for…?

The Packers strategy gets talked up but they were contenders when they took their QB’s of the future. Spending a 1st was not a huge opportunity cost when they already had a winning roster (made it to the NFCCG the year before drafting Love, won the division the third time in a row before drafting Rodgers).
I mean, when you really think about it, the Falcons were 8 minutes and 11 points from being an 11-6 team. They lost 4 games in the last minute by 3 or less points. They were a much better team than we give them credit for..*slightly throws up in mouth*

"So Cousins, how do you feel after the Falcons used their 1st round pick to draft your future successor instead of providing you with weapons?"

Cousins is the top trending player on Spotrac (the pro sports contract website) - Ha.

But he's basically un-cuttable for the next three seasons. What's even more interesting is that his year 3 cap hit is $57.5M and his dead cap is $25M.

This sets up a scenario where if Penix is ready to go by year 3, either by injury to Cousins or just being the better choice, the Falcons would have a choice between carrying Cousins at $57.5M or releasing him and eating the $25M dead cap.

Or a trade but most of the money is salary so it doesn't really set up for a trade where the receiving team gets the benefit of big bonuses already paid on that contract value . . . so they would have to want an almost 39 year old Kirk Cousins at $35M.

They have set off on a strange, risky path here.

You have to think that Cousins might be back on the block. Idk even know if he's tradeable but that contract and this pick makes absolutely no sense.

His contract is not trade-friendly. It's decent for 2024 but after that it gets substantially unattractive. I don't see how a team would trade for that contract unless they had already worked out a restructure with him.

Or as Mickey Loomis would call it, "Tuesday".

Yeah, that's fair - they can play around with the dead money but that requires the player to agree. It's much harder to be a cap wizard with a ticked off player who you owe big money in the form of salary.

How long before Fontenot gets accused of being a plant by the Saints?
It already has been. I posted a thread from their message board where they discussed it. lol

What makes it so weird to me is that Penix is going to be 24 years old when the season starts. So if Cousins plays out his contract, Penix is going to get his first start at 27 years old? Makes absolutely no sense.
