After a solid rookie campaign, continued development from Jordan Howden would further strengthen an outstanding Saints secondary.

By Bob Rose - Saints News Network | SI

The New Orleans Saints got a pleasant surprise from S Jordan Howden, a fifth-round choice in the 2023 NFL Draft. As the 11th pick of the fifth round and the 146th overall selection, it was hoped that Howden could contribute on special teams and possibly add some depth to the secondary.

In five years at the University of Minnesota, Howden had four interceptions, broke up 20 passes, and had 5.5 tackles for loss among 240 total stops. His senior season was the most productive with two interceptions, five throws broken up, and 3.5 stops for loss with 40 solo tackles.

A solid preseason and training camp easily earned Howden a spot on the active roster last season. As expected, he'd only see action on special teams in the first two weeks of the regular season. However, a suspension to veteran S Marcus Maye earned Howden his first career start in Week 3.

Maye returned to the starting lineup after his three-game suspension. However, Howden had played well enough to remain a part of several defensive backfield packages. When Maye missed the last six games of the year with an injury, the Saints had no drop-off with the rookie. Howden returning to the starting lineup. ...

Countdown to Kickoff: Nathan Shepherd is the Saints Player of Day 93

We’re continuing to count down the days until the New Orleans Saints kick off their 2024 season in September, and with 93 days left to go we’re highlighting the current owner of the No. 93 jersey: Nathan Shepherd. The Saints signed the veteran defensive tackle last offseason after he started his career with the New York Jets, and he enjoyed some success in his first year wearing black and gold. Let’s get to know him a little better:

Shepherd played a career-high 594 snaps last year, also setting new personal-bests in sacks (3.5), tackles (50), and quarterback pressures (23). He’s a good...

2024 Saints game previews: Week 17 vs. Las Vegas Raiders

You can bet Derek Carr has this date circled on his calendar. The New Orleans Saints will host his old Las Vegas Raiders team for their penultimate matchup in 2024, giving Carr a great opportunity for payback on the team that cast him aside.

Of course this isn’t the same Raiders team that Carr played for. Antonio Pierce replaced Josh McDaniels as head coach, and Luke Getsy was hired as their offensive coordinator this spring (having also been pursued by the Saints). Their quarterback competition is pitting Gardner Minshew against Aidan O’Connell, who chose to give up Carr’s old No. 4...

93 days until Saints season opener: Every player to wear No. 93

  • News source: John Sigler

There haven’t been many New Orleans Saints players to wear the No. 93 jersey — but those who have put it on have often made an impact. We’re counting down the days until the Saints open up their 2024 season against the Carolina Panthers by reflecting on all of the players who have worn the corresponding day’s jersey number.

Today, that group includes some of the best defensive linemen in team history — guys like Wayne Martin, Darren Howard, and David Onyemata. Not to mention one of the Rob Ninkovich, the one who got away from the Saints’ 2006 draft class to develop into a fan-favorite with the New England Patriots. Junior Galette had some great years with the Saints before injuries and poor off-field decisions ended his career.

With 93 days to go until the 2024 season kicks off, here’s the full list of players to wear No. 93 with the Saints (via

Kool-Aid McKinstry hopes to get back on the field following injury

NEW ORLEANS — Saints rookie Kool-Aid McKinstry said his main focus is getting back on the field, after an injury held him back from practice this summer, according to Nola.com.

“I’m very itchy to get out there, just to get out there with the guys and build that bond and that chemistry,” McKinstry told our partners.

McKinstry said he found out he had a Jones fracture, " which is a break of the fifth metatarsal, on the pinky toe side of the foot", during NFL combine medical evaluations.

He had surgery to repair the injury and is close to returning. He could make a comeback next week at...

At 33, versatile Taysom Hill gratified by opportunities in Saints' new offense

METAIRIE, La. — The New Orleans Saints' experimental usage of Taysom Hill at virtually every offensive skill position — and even on special teams — has been so unconventional that he wondered whether his ubiquity might be reined in under a new offensive coordinator.

Klint Kubiak — whose hiring this offseason represented a definitive break from the Sean Payton offense that remained in place for two years after Payton left New Orleans — wasn't about to let Hill's incertitude fester.

The new coordinator traveled to Utah to visit Hill and to lay out his vision for the former BYU quarterback...

Good for Mike Nolan. The former New Orleans Saints linebackers coach has been selected as the United Football League’s first coach of the year for his efforts leading the Michigan Panthers, who have outscored their opponents 228-189.

Nolan improved the Panthers’ record from 4-6 in 2023 (when they were part of the USFL, competitors to the XFL) to 7-3 this season (after the spring leagues merged to form the UFL). His Panthers team will now compete with the Birmingham Stallions, with the winner advancing the UFL Championship game in St. Louis.

Since leaving the Saints back in 2020, Nolan...
