They traded up for two of those players. Targeting and trading up for the player you like is different than reaching for a lower-rated player out of need.

Just because fans may not have agreed with the choice doesn’t mean the grade didn’t match the pick.

The board may not be happy with who we pick. But I don’t think this is smoke. I don’t think Ireland is the type who would reach for OT if there are reasonably higher grades on other players.

That and the offense is designed to make oline play look better. If a highly rated OL is there take him but this draft is so deep at T you can get a good piece of Clay to mold in the 2nd

Penning was considered by everyone to be a top 20, if not top 15 pick that year and the Saints took him at #19. It was a bad pick and a bad evaluation, but it was not a reach for need.

Latham is a top 15 guy. In fact, he probably goes top 10.

Obviously, I think he was a reach. Glad the Saints didn't make the mistake. Given how the draft shook out, a few teams reached allowing the Saints to get good value. Bowers would have been incredible value, but I don't hate this pick.
