In her much-anticipated return to competitive gymnastics, Gabby Douglas showcased routines with difficult skills that proved she has the potential to compete with the best.

But several major mistakes signaled that she must show improvement over the next two months to be a strong contender for the U.S. Olympic team in Paris.


Douglas, a three-time Olympic champion, impressed Saturday at the American Classic in Katy, Tex., with a powerful double-twisting vault.

The 28-year-old hadn’t competed in nearly eight years, but her difficulty scores on bars and beam would rival those of some of the top Americans.

However, she began the competition with a fall on floor, then fell twice as she struggled through her routine on bars, her signature event.

Those errors led to a low all-around total of 50.650 as she finished 11th in a field that lacked many of the country’s top gymnasts……

Def want gabby to make the team but even if she doesn’t that’s gonna be a dang strong team
 
Isn’t 28 getting a little long in the tooth for olympic athletes?

For women’s gymnastics 22 is long in the tooth (and it’s actually probably 20)

28 is ancient

Gabby, like Livvy does at LSU, gets all the coverage because of their name recog but they are mos def not the most talented at this point. So I'm going on record saying Gabby won't make it, not even as a specialist if she fell twice on her signature event. Heck, we are not even talking about two Olympians: Jade Carey, who won the American Classic (9 days after competing in the all around at the NCAA semi finals) or Suni Lee who is the reigning all arounder.

That being said, we're also not talking about Simone but that could turn out to be a good thing in terms of her not feeling as much pressure as I think she did at Tokyo.

I wouldn’t put too much stock in falls from first meet back
Difference between meet and practice is probably huge - elite athletes seem like pooh when they come back from layoff then have huge upswing

I hear ya but, again she's 28. It doesn't bode well.
